A bite guard, also called a splint or night guard, is a custom-made plastic plate that fits over the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. It is usually worn at night and keeps the upper and lower teeth apart, so they do not wear directly against each other.
A bite guard may be considered if you grind or clench your teeth. Signs can include worn teeth, a sensitive or tired jaw on waking, headaches around the temples, or someone hearing the grinding at night. Whether a bite guard is appropriate is assessed by the dentist after examining the teeth and jaw.
An impression or scan of the jaw is taken, after which the guard is made to measure. When it is fitted, it is adjusted until it sits properly and the bite is correct. Follow-up checks are then carried out to see whether it still fits and how it is wearing.
A bite guard does not remove the cause of grinding; it protects the teeth from its effects. The guard is cleaned after use and stored dry. The dentist will discuss with you when a check-up or replacement makes sense.
