A crown is a cap that is placed over a damaged tooth and restores its shape and function. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching it to the teeth next to it or to implants. Both are custom-made in a dental laboratory, in a material and colour chosen to match your teeth.
A crown may be considered when there is too little tooth tissue left for a regular filling: after a fracture, after extensive decay, or after root canal treatment. A bridge is one way to replace a missing tooth. The dentist will assess what is most suitable in your situation after an examination.
The tooth is first prepared and shaped, after which an impression or scan is taken. The laboratory uses this to make the crown or bridge. In the meantime, you will usually receive a temporary solution. At a following appointment, the final crown or bridge is tried in and fixed in place.
A crown or bridge itself cannot get decay, but the edge where it meets the tooth and the gum around it can. Daily cleaning therefore remains important, including between the teeth and under a bridge. The dentist will discuss the best way for you to do this.
This page gives general information about the treatment. It is not advice about your own situation: what applies to you will be decided by the dentist after an examination. If you have a question or a complaint, please call the practice on (0032) 089 44 02 01.
