Laser periodontics

What is it?

Periodontics is the care of the gums and the bone that holds the teeth in place. When there is inflammation, the attachment around a tooth can become looser and the bone underneath can reduce. Treatment aims to calm the inflammation and prevent further loss. A laser may be used as an aid, alongside cleaning.

When is it needed?

Gums that bleed when you brush, are swollen or are receding can be a sign of inflammation. Persistent bad breath or teeth that start to feel looser can also be related. Often, there are no symptoms for a long time. Whether periodontitis is present is determined by examining the gums and, if needed, X-rays.

How does it work?

First, the condition of the gums is assessed, including by measuring the depth of the space between each tooth and the gum. This is followed by a thorough cleaning above and below the gum line, using a laser if needed. After some time, the measurements are taken again to see how the gums have responded.

What to bear in mind

Periodontitis is a condition that is kept under control, not something that is solved in one treatment. Aftercare and daily cleaning at home are a fixed part of this. Smoking affects gum healing. The dentist will discuss what this means for you.

This page gives general information about the treatment. It is not advice about your own situation: what applies to you will be decided by the dentist after an examination. If you have a question or a complaint, please call the practice on (0032) 089 44 02 01.
